In a world where the digitalization of administrative services has become a priority, a remarkable new breakthrough has just emerged: online passport renewal. This process, which was once tedious and time-consuming, is now simplified thanks to the implementation of digital procedures. This progress marks a significant step in the modernization of public services and offers citizens a practical and accessible solution for their administrative procedures.
Online passport renewal
Good news for American citizens: the United States Department of State has reopened the beta version of its system online passport renewal, allowing a limited number of passport holders to submit renewal applications each day.
Initial operation and update
The treatment of passports online was initially announced in late 2021, but was paused in March 2023 for additional developments. Prior to this innovation, the standard procedure for obtaining a passport required an in-person visit to a passport agency or acceptance facility. Renewals could also be submitted by mail.
Conditions for renewing online
To be able to use the service of online renewal, certain specific criteria must be met:
- Be aged 25 or over.
- Have a passport valid for 10 years, issued between 2009 and 2015.
- Do not request a change of name, gender, date or place of birth.
- Do not travel abroad for at least eight weeks.
- Reside in the United States.
- Apply for a standard tourist passport.
- Have your current or most recent passport in your possession.
Steps to renew online
To begin the procedure online passport renewal, go to the MyTravelGov page to create an account or log in with your existing credentials. Then click on the button “ Renew your passport » to start your application. If the daily quota is reached, you will not be able to start the request.
Required information
You will be asked to enter your most recent passport information, as well as your upcoming travel plans. You will also need to upload a digital photo ID and pay the renewal fee by debit or credit card. You will then receive two emails: one confirming that the payment is pending and the other confirming its receipt.
Monitoring and treatment
Keep your current passport with you – do not mail it. You can also sign up to receive email updates one week after submitting your application. Please note that applying online does not reduce processing time, which remains between six and eight weeks at the time of writing. If you require expedited service or are applying for a special passport (such as a diplomatic passport), you will need to use the mail option.
