THE green sand of Papakōlea are in fact made up of olivine, a mineral formed during the cooling and crystallization of magma. This mineral, which comes from ash cones from active volcanoes, has shades varying from olive green to brown, depending on its composition.

Touching this sand is a unique experience, as it is much coarser than traditional sand. This particularity is due to the composition of olivine, also found in certain meteorites.
